Chapter nineteen

“You did what?” Tim questioned in disbelief as Holly showed him the printed-out pictures she’d taken from the sheriff’s office. “I can’t believe you did that, Holly. Did you not learn your lesson the last time when I let you talk me into breaking and entering? We were nearly arrested that day. The sheriff let us off easy.”

“I know, I did think about it. I just couldn’t help myself when I saw all the files and documents on his desk” she answered, lifting her eyes off the autopsy results for a minute. “This is all I can think about, Tim. My mom’s in there, and it’s looking like there’s no proof to get her out any time soon. Sheriff Carlton’s doing his best…And I know that, but I just can’t sit back and do nothing either. I’ll go crazy if I do.”

Tim sat there and watched her for a brief moment. He could tell by the look on her face she was very worried about her mom. He reached out to stroke her cheek and his gaze softened before he spoke in a lower tone. “No more snooping around and looking for answers on your own. You have to let me know, from this point forward, what your plan is at all times. I’ll help you. Okay? You’re not going to do this alone.”

She nodded as a smile slackened her lips. Tim rubbed her back quickly before walking away so she could work on the board she’d drawn up on her living room wall.

“So, we know Jake murdered his wife and somehow managed to pin it on Walters. We also know Walters is out of prison now and on parole, so it’s possible he killed Jake for revenge.”

Tim’s attentive to her every word even as his eyes feast on the autopsy results he’d been looking at.

“Walters prints were all over the crime scene. The murder weapon wasn’t found, but the bullet from this victim matched the bullets from Walters previous crime victim…The murder Lizzy Brown witnessed. That pins Walters to this crime scene as well, but it doesn’t prove he committed that particular crime entirely, does it? The detectives had the evidence right in front of them and they probably didn’t need to probe any further. They got ahold of Walters and prosecuted him for all the crimes.”

“But your mom witnessed Jake murder his wife, so he made her stay silent all these years, threatening to kill her…And you.”

Taut emotions clamped down on Holly’s throat, making it difficult for her to speak. She inhaled deeply, filling her lungs with air, and sniffed to push back the first sting of tears that rushed to the surface. “She did it to protect us.”

Tim stayed quiet as his eyes lingered on hers, and Holly averted her eyes first before moving to sit by his side on the couch. “When they found your mom’s killer, how did it feel?” she asked and stared at her quivering hands for a minute. “I’ve always wondered.”

He took some time before he answered.
